Pai said the FCC planned to “return to the light-touch regulatory framework”, targeting specifically the so-called Title II section of the Communications Act, which provides the FCC with the regulatory authority to impose net neutrality rules, Ars Technica reported [1].
Net neutrality proponents were quick to condemn the plan: Access Now called [2]it a “U-turn for the internet”, while EFF said [3] it would leave Internet users and small businesses “completely at the mercy of ISPs”. Reuters estimated [4] that a “fierce political battle over the future of the internet regulation” would follow the proposal.
Ars Technica also reported [5] that US ISPs claim to support net neutrality principles, while still supporting the reversal of Title II classification.
