Google paying publishers to work on its new mobile-firendly format

Google is paying multiple publishers working on the new “Stamp” project to cover their expenses relating to creating content and building systems to accommodate to the format, Recode reported. Participating companies include Conde Nast, Hearst, Time Inc., Mashable,, CNN, The Washington Post and Vox Media.

The new format is reportedly optimised for phones and similar to Snapchat’s Discover and Instagram’s Stories features, built on the fast-loading AMP format that Google has been working on since a couple of years. According to Newsweek, Stamp supports text, photos and video, which are presented on slides that the user can flip through.

The new format will be tied into Google search, which could give publishers access to the huge user base of the search product. Unlike content on the comparable Snapchat and Instagram features, the stories could also be featured on publishers’ own websites, the Wall Street Journal reported.

According to Recode, Google plans to initially make the format available to a small percentage to mobile users and scale up later.
