Facebook sold Russia-linked ads seeking to influence US elections

A shady Russian company bought Facebook ads during the US presidential campaign with the intention of influencing voters, the Washington Post reported

According to Facebook’s post on the issue, about $100,000 was spent between June 2015 and May 2017, in connection to “inauthentic accounts and Pages in violation of our policies”. Facebook’s research suggests that the accounts and Pages were affiiiated with one other and “likely operated out of Russia”. The company has since shut down the accounts and Pages in question.

Although the majority of these ads “didn’t specifically reference the US presidential election, voting or a particular candidate”, their messaging seemed to focus on “amplifying divisive social and political messages”.

Facebook says it has shared its findings with the US authorities.
