Intel’s antitrust fine in Europe to be re-examined

The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) ruled in Intel’s favour and referred the antitrust case back to a lower court, setting aside its 2009 decision which resulted in a €1,06-billion-euro fine, DW reported.

The case concerns rebates, or price cuts, that Intel had offered to manufacturers that used the company’s products. The European Commission had argued that the practice was anticompetitive. Now, the CJEU is asking a lower court to examine if such rebates in fact restrict competition, the New York Times reported

The latest development is undoubtedly followed keenly by Google and other tech companies who have been singled out by European antitrust regulators. According to VentureBeat, Google may expect it’s own antitrust case to continue for years, although the company has already said it would comply with the Commission’s ruling on its shopping comparison service.

In related news, Google has been accused of pressuring a think tank it sponsored into firing a scholar, after he had praised the EU’s decision to issue a record fine to Google for abusing its dominant dominance with its shopping comparison service, the Guardian reported.
