Affirming earlier reports, Facebook is preparing a feature that permits subscriptions for news publishers’ content on the platform, Campbell Brown, the company’s head of news partnerships, said at an industry conference, The Street reported.
The company is planning on creating a paywall that would limit users’ access to 10 articles, after which they would be required to pay. Based on Instant Articles, the feature will aggregate stories from different publishers based on readers interests. Facebook will also direct readers to publishers’ home pages prompting them take out a digital subscription.
According to Adweek, publishers will have full control over the locking and unlocking their articles, while the methods used for paying for subscriptions are still being worked out.
There is no information yet on how subscription revenue will be shared between Facebook and participating publishers.
