Facebook’s combat against fake news showing little signs of success

Among the social media company’s efforts to counter fake news, the collaboration with fact-checkers that aims to check articles for their veracity has been a central one. Now, the Guardian reports that the results of the initiative have been mixed at best.

Facebook hasn’t shared data on the success of the initiative, but several websites reported that they hadn’t seen much impact on their traffic following a “disputed” label on their stories. Crucially, by the time fact-checkers have had a chance to check articles, they typically have already been widely shared on the platform, and labelling them as disputed at that point has little effect.

On the other hand, readers who distrust the media and fact-checkers might be further encouraged to share a “disputed” story, the labelling having the opposite result.
