Paying for online content: people are finally spending on culture, also news

Writing for the New York Times, Farhad Manjoo goes through several examples that show that digital audiences are increasingly willing to pay for online content. In addition to various subscription-based services such as Spotify and Netflix, audiences are paying through other services, such as Patreon.

Also the news industry is benefitting from this development, as for instance the News York Times has seen a surge in subscriptions in the past months. However, more evidence is still needed to see if the trend is impacting the news industry more widely.

Perhaps the growing popularity of online payments will revive the news media industry’s enthusiasm for micropayment, which has ebbed and flowed regularly over the past few years.
