Fake news have limited audience, new study shows

In terms of time spent, fake news audiences attract lower reader engagement than “real” news, with the exception of Drudge Report, the conservative news aggregation site, which attracts exceptional audience engagement.

Moreover, the analysed data go against the idea of fake news audience being in a filter bubble, showing that they visit other news sites just as often as the visitors to real news sites.

The study would therefore seem to call into question the extent of the fake news issue, the authors conclude, although the research only looked at consumption and not how the audiences interpret the news. Given the on-going coverate about fake news, we can expect more in-depth research that should help understand the wider picture.
