Germany investigating “unprecedented” spread of fake news

Following the spread of an article on Breitbart about a church fire in Dortmund on New Years Eve, the city debunked the story with the police saying that no incident had taken place, the Guardian reported.

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung said that Breitbart was deliberately trying to convey an image of “an image of chaotic civil war-like conditions” in the country, and called it a possible “foretaste” of what may be expected in the build-up to the parliamentary election in September, according to the Guardian. Previously it was reported that Breitbart has plans to expand to Germany and France.

Yesterday the Guardian reported that according to the German domestic intelligence agency, last month’s cyber-attack against Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) used the same “attack architecture” as an earlier attack against the German parliament, attributed to a Russian hacking group.

In December, DW reported that the German government was planning to create a bureau to fight “disinformation” online. EUobserver published an opinion piece highlighting the complications in defining “fake news”, and dangers in creating a body responsible for deleting “fake news”, which risks backfiring and fuelling the popular distrust of the establishment.
