Marcelo Rech elected President of the Brazilian newspaper association

After his election, Rech said there was a need to take journalism to a new cycle of public recognition of its relevance: “As newspapers, in all our formats and platforms, we need to do much more than transmit news: we must be professional certifiers of reality.”

Essential to this is the rebirth of trust in today's journalism: “A fundamental value is associated directly with freedom of the press, namely trust by people and society in journalists and publishers who make free communication and independent, high-quality journalism their way of life.”

Rech succeeds Carlos Fernando Monteiro Lindenberg Neto, CEO of the Gazeta Network (Espírito Santo State), who served two terms (2012-2016) as president of the Brazilian Association of Newspapers (ANJ)

Rech was elected President of the World Editors Forum in 2015. He is the Executive Director of Journalism at Groupo RBS, one of the leading media groups in Brazil, which owns 18 TV stations, two community TV stations, 25 radio stations, eight newspapers and internet portals, among other media businesses.

Outgoing ANJ president, Neto, noting that the serious crisis in Brazil shows signs of being overcome, emphasised that the best path for Brazilian newspapers is unity within ANJ. “As Brazil’s overall economic scenario improves, we should experience less difficulty in responding adequately to our industry’s specific challenges,” he said.
