Atex emphasises greater efficiency

“Publishers are looking for ways of doing things faster, better, cheaper with fewer resources – I know it's not popular to say that,” he says, “but it's a necessity. It's a necessity if you want to give a strong future to this business. We need to make sure that there are lean processes in place. And this is where we heading with our solution.”

Atex is at World Publishing Expo in Hamburg showing a number of new products and features, beginning with their new product software suite, which is called Atex Digital Media.

Vezzoli describes it as a complete environment that handles all the necessities of a modern publisher. “It's a digital platform based on our digital technology, that is called polopoly,” he says. “We offer in the same platform digital asset management, picture desk functionalities and video functionalities. We also do social curation – we integrate Twitter, Instagram and others into a dashboard, and we give them to the editors so they can select content that has been produced internally, externally on social networks by reporters and contributors. Then they can push it to all publishing channels – digital channels, print channels as well because we should not forget that print is not dead at all.”

Also in the spotlight this week is Atex's ACT. “It's a contributor tool,” Vezzoli says. “It's a kind of dashboard for editors where they can write for all the channels from a browser, from their phone, from their tablet, from any work platform for managing, gathering content and publishing. It's also very important that this platform is not only accessible to journalists but to all of the people who contribute nowadays to the content workflow of a newspaper.”

This last part is important because Atex has customers that are very actively using user-generated content. “We have customers that are letting final readers write-to-fit on the print page, so they can publish on the website or in print,” he says.

This is especially true for regional newspapers that have strong communities, Vezzoli notes. “When they have a strong community, they get to know some people in this community very well and these people can contribute to the newspaper, so they are adding value to the newspaper. And the publishers really let them work within the workflow, which is something that was completely unheard of five years ago.”

Atex is at the World Publishing Expo with their partner Applix, a company that specialises in app publishing and which Vezzoli says manages Atex's channel for publishing on apps, Android and iOS.

Noting the company has been around since 1973, Vezzoli says sometimes people think of Atex as primarily a company with print-based roots, but he is quick to note that “today, Atex is a company that is totally focused on digital. We have the largest publishers in the world using our solutions for fueling their digital business and this is the message we are giving here this year.”
