Digital Print Moves

Digital newspaper printing has been a niche market for many years. In the last 20 month a number of new digital presses have been purchased and installed by distributors and printers in Europe and America. New players have joined the market. Hybrid offset/inkjet printing has developed rapidly in the newspaper segment.

With the World Publishing Expo 2013 in Berlin (IFRA Expo) WAN-IFRA responds to the market and takes the lead in showcasing, explaining and discussing the value of digital newspaper printing today and tomorrow. Under the motto “Digital Print Moves,” a special pavilion will be offered at the World Publishing Expo that is closely linked to a digital print conference and a special report on the same topic. In the Digital Print Pavilion the visitors will see innovations from such traditional suppliers as Koenig & Bauer AG (KBA), Océ Printing Systems, Kodak and manroland web systems GmbH, but also start-ups like peecho.

In August WAN-IFRA organised an expert meeting at their headquarters in Darmstadt. The key conclusion was:

“Inkjet is here. It arrived in the newspaper industry as a complementary technology in conjunction with conventional newspaper printing. It creates new business. It does not replace conventional newspaper printing. It allows individualisation of content, passwords for data access, targeted advertising and changing latest news without press stops. Full-page inkjet newspaper printing is an opportunity for remote distribution and targeted short-run content packages (sections and supplements).”

The possibilities of digital printing for newspaper production are quite well known, but the Digital Printing Strategies SFN Forum will bring the World Publishing Expo visitor up to speed on how he or she can better use this technology for business. A strategic look at how to consider digital printing in short and long term planning, as a complement to other printing technologies, and a revenue earner.
