Women in Media Lunch: the importance of mentoring and sponsoring

The Women in Media Luncheon at the Media Port of the World Publishing Expo 2012 was opened with a panel discussion on mentoring and sponsoring, featuring Angela Cullen, Bureau Chief Bloomberg News Germany; Anne Simon, Executive Director of Soroptimist International of Europe; and Carla Buzasi, Editor-in-Chief of The Huffington Post UK and AOL UK (pictured from left to right).

Simon opened the discussion by focusing on the importance of mentoring (giving advice, sharing knowledge and contacts) and sponsoring (concretely opening doors for others) for both men and women. Women need more high level mentors and sponsors to help correct the vast inequalities in senior management around the world, she said, pointing to the fact that there are only 19 females in the Fortune 500, and none in France's CAC40 nor in Germany's DAX.

Buzasi's advice to young aspiring journalists was to take every single opportunity and make these opportunities work for you. The phrase 'it's not what you know but who you know' has some truth, she said, but you can seek out these vital contacts. "I have sought people out who I feel can mentor me and I try to repay this now to younger journalists," Buzasi added.

Cullen has never had an official mentor either but said that she has found people to help her along her way. "You have to want it yourself, and be able to map out a path for yourself," she said. Bloomberg made a conscious decision a couple of years ago to move towards more equality for women, and this has vastly increased awareness of the issues, Cullen said.
