Day One at the Conference and we are at the Newsroom Summit. The first session. Managing Newsroom in the Social Media Era.

Moderating it is Gilles Demptos, Director, Publications and Events, WAN-IFRA, Asia Pacific Pte Ltd., Singapore.

First speaker on stage is Erik Bjerager, President, World Editors Forum.

The focus: Top trends to watch in journalism.

Erik shared an anecdote of his time in Pune yesterday. Of his visit of the famed Aga Khan Palace, where Gandhi was detained in the 1940s. And of a Gandhi quotation he noted - that human endeavor must be to advance the interest of the community. So Erik said this must also be at the heart of the newspaper profession.

Erik said he had noted 17 trends in today's journalism. 'Some apply to all, some may apply at some time in the past,' he said.

These are the trends -

  1. Newsrooms are increasingly outsourced.
  2. Two-speed journalism is now a reality.
  3. Long form journalism is on the rise. Even smart phones are used to read long articles.
  4. Newsrooms come in many organizational models. There is no one right way of doing this.
  5. Breaking News is digital. But the danger is that speed could sacrifice facts.
  6. Data journalism is accepted as a discipline today. More value on ability to access, mine and analyze data and use it to tell a story.  
  7. Infographics dominate the Web.
  8. Barriers between print and broadcast has shrunk. The question - Will videos produced by newspapers than TV channel dominate the living room?
  9. Video is becoming a social affair. The HuffPost Live is an example.
  10. More momentum from mobile. Mobile does not generate the big dollars as print does but challenge to newspapers is when readers move to mobile.
  11. Social media enrich journalism.
  12. Social media talent will invigorate Edit staff. The Guardian example of using Twitter to cover the riots in London reflects this well.
  13. Digital training is a necessity. Our staff now have only a fraction of the digital skills required.
  14. Reporters are better curators than bloggers or aggregators. Even the smallest newspapers can do this.
  15. Journalism must be found. On the Net. Optimise content to search engines.
  16. All-round newspapers are challenged online by big tabloids.
  17. Ethics; there is a new focus today.
