Towards better newsroom efficiency and production

La Presse which publishes seven newspapers in Canada, came across lots of changes in their newsroom in the past 10 years. Yann Pineau, who comes from the French speaking part of Canada spoke on these changes from the outsourcing of their printing in 2008 and launching their website in 2000.

Yann compared the pages of different newspapers 10 years ago and the present to show the changes in design and the ways tried out to bring in new readers.

The first of the changes in La Presse is more graphic artists from outside the newsroom. When the buzzword is newsroom integration, go and see the best out in the world, he says. Yann himself travelled to the Europe, US and a few other countries to learn the tips and tricks.

The fear the newsroom had was, they would have to do everything for the print and online, which he said wasn't true. This had to be taken away from the minds of the reporters.

"It is important to take time to explain and listen to make people feel they are part of it," Yann says.

In the process, he said, La Presse learnt that the best motivation to try new things is sitting next to the ones doing work. And now, everybody in the newsroom breaking news to the world, has a blog now.

He shared the experience of Sophie Cousineau, the business columnist at La Presse in blogging and how she now finds it useful to get to the resources.

He  said that the Wiki on softwares they used was dumped when people began using the blogs more.

When it comes to training, Yann says small groups that have a mix of people who are very tech savvy and the one ones who hesitate to try new things.

"Each one of us has its own pace of learning. Sometimes it was three days to sit with them for a training in a single area," he said.
