Pune in Festival Mood

Pune is in festival mode.

For the past week, the community here has been celebrating Lord Ganesha, the elephant head god.

Ever since this festival became a public celebration, it has become a huge mela. Pandals (sheds) are erected in all neighbourhoods, the image is installed and worshipped every day.

The decorations, the music and the onstage shows draw people to these pandals. Families visit the best ones in their area and the big ones elsewhere.

Areas in the older parts of Pune turn into festival zones after dusk.

The festival is in the last phase now and on Sunday, the images will be taken out in procession to the sea and immersed there, signalling the end of the celebration.

For tourists and new comers to Pune this is indeed the best time to scour the city.

And daytime temperatures are at 26 degrees – pleasant indeed.
