A brand-new experience daily

Launched eight months ago, The Daily is based in New York City and has a staff of 150. It publishes 100 pages every day, seven days a week, and has also launched a few special issues, such as one about Elizabeth Taylor.

Grossman-Cohen says the company created The Daily with the thinking that the tablet could provide users with a brand-new experience. “We designed it to take advantage of all the different things that a tablet can do,” she says.

The Daily has about 100 people working in news and creative, and she points out that is a very small staff to be producing 100 pages a day, especially when compared to The New York Times or The Wall Street Journal, each of which has hundreds of journalists.

Within three months of the launch, Grossman-Cohen says The Daily had more than 1 million downloads and now has 120,000 readers on a daily basis. Two-thirds of them are paying, and about half of them are annual subscribers.

Grossman-Cohen also notes that The Daily’s audience seems to enjoy the ads, and users spend about 20 seconds on each ad.

In total, she says people spend 20-30 minutes with the issue every day and often come back to it a few times throughout the day. “We’re very happy with the results,” she says.

Grossman-Cohen adds that The Daily has been popular throughout the country. “Our audience is everywhere – people in Kentucky like us as much as people in New York do,” she says.

And The Daily is also planning to expand its availability beyond the iPad. “We’ll be on Android very soon,” she says. “The web is vintage,” Grossman-Cohen says. “Our challenge is to operate on a brand-new platform within traditional digital parameters and systems. The moment is ripe for development and explosive growth and The Daily is working to be a pioneer.”
